As the grass greens up, many homeowners are anxious to get out and start working on their lawns. A little patience and care at this point will reward the gardener with a fine lawn later. |

Lawn owners often don’t realize the hazards of soil compaction. Insects, diseases, nematodes, improper watering and a lack of fertilizer are often blamed for a lawn’s decline when the real culprit is compaction. The problem starts when particles in the top 4 inches of the soil are compressed, reducing the pore spaces between them and impeding the movement of air, water and nutrients to the grass roots. This, in turn, stresses the grass plants, making them less able to compete with weeds and slow to recuperate from injury. In time a compacted lawn needs renovation. |

Proper Mowing
Mowing is the most misunderstood part of lawn care, and the most often incorrectly performed part of lawn care. Far too many people will set their mowers too low or "scalp" the lawn. This leads to thin and dying out grass, shallow root systems, and in the long run, NO GRASS. |

If you have purchased or own your own mower, then there are a few things you should do to take care for and insure the life of your mower. Most mowers require weekly, monthly, and yearly maintenance to keep them running in optimal condition. Keep in mind that many of these things are only minor in duty but can determine the life-span of you mowers & trimmers. Note: if you are not mechanically inclined, there are those who can do the work for you at a nominal cost. |

The grass will be starting to grow this month so you can give your lawn its first cut of the season – make sure the blades are set high.
Carry on aerating your lawn and rake it to get out debris and dead grass and moss.
If moss is a problem you can choose from one of the extensive range of mosskillers on the market. Lawn sand, with nitrogen, is a traditional treatment, which many gardeners prefer, or you can buy mosskiller on its own. Many gardeners prefer to kill weeds at the same time – in this case choose the Feed, Weed and Mosskiller. |

You must first get rid of the food source — grubs, sod webworms and some beetles. Then you can use either a toxic cartridge that “smokes” their holes or a toxic pellet that you place in the burrows. |

Start with top-quality grass seed. Work the soil up a little with a rake. If you are overseeding consider using a slicing machine. Evenly sowing larger areas by hand is difficult, so use a spreader. Cover the seeds by raking a little soil over them. Fertilize and mulch only if it’s on a hillside. Use very little mulch. Water, water, water. |

Controlling Lawn Diseases
Lawn diseases can occur at anytime during the growing season. Leaf spot is a problem on fescue while melting-out is more of a problem on Kentucky bluegrass. Both diseases cause small, purple to black spots on the leaves. The center of the spots can turn brown and die while the spot margin remains dark colored..... |

Guide to a Healthy Lawn
Picture a healthy green lawn: perfect for lounging, great for ball games and cookouts, a real asset to your home. But did you know that your lawn - and how you take care of it - could also help the environment? Healthy grass provides feeding ground for birds, which find it a rich source of insects, worms, and other food. Thick grass prevents soil erosion, filters contaminants from rainwater, and absorbs many types of airborne pollutants, like dust and soot. Grass is also highly efficient at converting carbon dioxide to oxygen, a process that helps clean the air. |

Keeping Lawns Weed Free
A few years ago weeds were a major lawn problem. Today, however, it is no longer necessary to spend hours of back-breaking labor pulling and digging trouble-some weeds. The use of selective lawn week killers such as Ortho Weed-B-Gon or Lilly-Miler, takes the drudgery out of lawn weeding. |
