The botanical name for tulips, Tulipa, is derived from the Turkish word tulpend or turban, which the flower resembles. Many people think of Holland as the home of the tulip, in reality wild tulips are native to Turkey and western and central Asia, with only a few species occurring in Europe.

Tulips should be planted as soon as they are puchased in the fall/Autumn. Plant in well-drained garden soil, the top of the bulb 4 - 5 inches below the surface of the soil

After flowering, tulips that are not going to be left in the garden for more than one year should be pulled out before the stalks and leaves have turned brown. Tulips that are going to be left in the garden should not be cut back to the ground until the foliage has turned completely brown.
